  1. FLYING IN ALASKA --
  2. There are more small planes per capita in Alaska than
  3. anywhere else in the U.S. So, if you are flying with
  4. an Alaska bush pilot, you're joining a travel tradi-
  5. tion. If you're doing your own bush piloting, FILE A
  6. FLIGHT PLAN! That's the basic rule in Alaska. Check
  7. the weather, pilot reports and flight publications for
  8. enroute information and destination. Make sure you have
  9. protective clothing on (or aboard) in case of unsched-
  10. uled landing. Take a survival kit. Alaska law requires
  11. certain minimum items be carried in the aircraft for
  12. cross-country flights during summer months; additional
  13. items must be carried from October through April. Check
  14. with the FAA for specfic requirements. If you have a
  15. forced landing, think twice before leaving your air-
  16. craft. It is best to stay with the downed craft. Wea-
  17. ther is the single factor that causes most emergency
  18. and survival situations. Dress for the worst weather
  19. you could expect on your trip; have clothing to live
  20. in, not be found dead in. Check weather before depart-
  21. ing. Watch for changing weather conditions. If they
  22. look doubtful, make the 180-degree decision: Turn
  23. around and go home.
